Hey gang,

I currently use the aquaclear quick filter attachments on my powerheads on 3 tanks--i usually buy those replacement cartridges but they are almost four bucks just for two replacements! quite expensive.

does anyone have any ideas on what i could maybe substitute these replacement cartridges since i am changing them every other week--im looking for a fabric/material that would work at removing micron/diatomacious particles..

i didnt see anything at wallyworld (walmart) in the fabric/quilting section that would filter such small particles..so im at a loss.Would pantyhose work? :screwy:

thanks everyone

Go to a cloth/sewing store and look at the poly-fil type material on a roll, serveral thicknesses and there's also thin (open cell) foam. Strip out an old filter and wrap this stuff around the frame.

I've used both of the above. They both work. I don't know how the strainer on the intake for you powerhead is, but I use the Rio Powerheads for a lot of stuff and I just get the replacement sponges for the Aquaclear 30. They are $3 for 3 of them and you can cut them in half for this use. 50 cents a piece ain't bad. I then cut a cross in them with scissors and stick them on.

BTW, if you go with Dr. Joe's idea, make sure the poly fill isn't treated with anything (like flame retardent, etc).

thanks dr joe-im headed to a fabric store this weekend anyways to make curtains, so ill look at the poly on a roll stuff...

thanks everyone so much! mel

I use a Fluval 4 foam sleeve insert in my quickfilter attachment.

They have to be trimmed for length but the diameter is perfect. They have a round hole cut down the length of them and the smaller sponge piece is still there. I pull out the interior sponge piece, and cut about a 2" piece to plug the bottom. Just leave out the plastic frame inside.

Burt :)

thanks burt! ill check those out..

I clean my cartidges with a hose. Then soak 'em in bleach water overnight and reuse them. They last for months maybe years.

The bleach is a unnecessary step, it's mechanical filtration so just wash the detritus out.

i've used pot scrubbers in the filter attachment. Its cheap, allows good water flow, its easy to rinse out and very colorful. :)
