I use carbon in my Whisper, and I don't do filter maintenance but lilke change the cartridge every 6-12 months. It is very porus so it makes a great bio filter. So technically, you only have to change it weekly/monthly if you are using it to polish your water. I use it more as a bio media so I don't have to replace it at all if I don't want to.

I would replace it with more biomax.... when I ran carbon I replaced it every 3 weeks.... now on some tanks I use chemipure wich says replace every 6 months but I replace every 2-3 months....
