I am looking into a simple flood and drain system project very soon but am still unsure of a few things, i was hoping some mfk's could give me advice on a few things, such as how deep should the flower pot tray be? How many inch's of water should be in the flower pot at all times? What is a good way for the drain pipe to be set up? Also if water comes in on one end and out on the other should the flower pot tray be elevated or flat? And is their a certain type of gravel to use, i notice a lot of people use these little bead looking things? Sorry for going on in on but i am just curious.
Thanks.

At least 9 inches deep, though not necessary depending on what you grow. The best cheap media is 1/4 inch gravel. 5$ a bag from box stores. You can also use Bio balls or scrubbies if you're using adult plants.

Thanks for info, i will go about 8 to 9 inch deep then using rubermaid tubs that i will cut. Also this is a new setup so i will be using juvenile plants or new seeds. Now i am wondering do you use soil or just straight gravel? And what should the depth of the water be thats running throught the tub? Again sorry for so many questions but i am just trying to understand the system before i do.
Thanks

You only want to use gravel, what kind and how many fish will You be stocking? If You go the seed route You will need to sprout them elswhere before adding to your growbed.b As far as water level You never what it to go above the surface of the gravel. are You using a bell siphon or will it be continuous flow?

Thank you!!! Any specific gravel or just any kind will do? I am goin with continuous flow,(a submersable rio 1700 will power it) also i have 6 baby tilapia i would like to use for this, the pond is a small 80 gallon. And i am thinking of doing 2 rubbermaid tubs above it to grow.

angular is preferred over round, It allows for a larger BB colony and lessens Your growbed from becoming clogged or compacted. Lowes sells a concrete mixing trough for like 15 bucks, 1 would be perfect for a 80 gal. but I guess it also depends on aestethetics. Take Your time when choosing a growbed. You should be able to find one the same width and length as Your tank. I'm assuming this is going to be an indoor setup?

No this will be outdoors, also the diy pond is 5ft by 3 ft, so i should try to get a growbed about same size as pond to go above instead of doin 2 seperate tubs.
Also do you have a similar set up going? If so could you post pics of it?
AND how do i properly install a exit drain for water, without getting cloggage?
