Hello MFK,

I would like to have a 240g 8x2x2 acrylic tank beside my bed. The tank would be right beside my bed and Im concerned if the tank was to crack and shatter while im on my bed. Would acrylic just crack or would it blow up and shatter everywhere. Sounds like a stupid question but im concerned

I'd be more concerned about the floor being able to support the weight, to be honest, unless the tank was made poorly or using inappropriate material thickness.

The tank will be in my basement which the flooring is made of concrete so I think i'll be fine

Acrylic tanks are considered bullet proof.
If you're buying used inspecting acrylic tanks is quite easy even for the inexperienced. As defects are easy to spot. Check the seams make sure everythings clear and homogenous looking. Google image search for things like "crazing" to get an idea of the type of imperfections you may encounter along with all the standard structural things that are a lot more apparent.
If you're really worried. Have one built with thick acrylic and bracing. If you need that peace of mind while you sleep.

Would 1/2" thick acrylic work? Would I need the rims around the tank and how much centre bracing will I need? The tank would probably be brand new and maybe even custom built. It just gives me the peice of mind

Get in touch with a local manufacturer. If you don't have one available a lot of tank builders will ship as well. Theres all kinds of tank thickness calculators online that could probably give you a starting point.

Just tell em you're gonna be sleeping under it so it needs to be bomb proof!

Luckily, there is a Miracles manufacturer about an hour away from where I live so they could ship the tank to me easily. Good call on telling them that I'll be right under the tank

One other thing to consider is the noise created by the tank.
If it has a sump the sound from cascading water can get annoying, as can the buzz, and friction noise from pumps and other electronic equipment needed needed to run a 240.
