High flow rate is not better if it blows through the media faster than the BB can break down the waste.
It is however thought that multiple FAST passes equals the same as slow flow.
I generally get the highest flow I can, and reduce it on the output with valves as I feel necessary. Also I prefilter a canister on any tank I might still use a canister on. (only 1 of my 8 tanks, being the show tank upstairs).
I get about 6 months between cleanings and they're still running fine on 3/4 regulated flow. My HOB's get most of the crud, and I can quickly swapout a homemade aqueon cartridge or rinse a Aquaclear sponge with the outside high pressure waterhose nozzle.. To each their own...
