What's your thinking behind using all three? You'll have your mechanical as well as three methods of bio, just seems overkill on a 180g.

No particular reason just how I would personally do it. What are you going to use for Mechanical prefiltration?

Noted tlindsey tlindsey .

Hi esoxlucius esoxlucius , U mean it is a waste ?

Not a waste just probably more bio filtration needed but depends on the bioload of the fish. More is better than less or not enough.

We have a saying in the hobby, we call it KISS (keep it simple stupid). The more complicated you have your set up the more likely things could go wrong, not to mention added work for you keeping on top of it all at maintainance time.

Before I knew any better I used to constantly tinker and mess around with my set ups but after a while you soon realise that the KISS method is pretty much the best way. I have two 180's running now and a 300 currently being set up. Each system is basic with no frills.

Your four tier mechanical/bio filtration set up, I am sure, will work a treat. It's not necessarily "a waste", just more complicated than it needs to be IMO.
