Aquarium fish dumped in my pond!

They told me.... It really isn't their fault they are young teenagers who's mom just died and they wanted to put her fish somewhere where they thought they would be happy. I couldn't say anything to them because they really thought they did good. I will deal with the algae eater before winter hits somehow. Perhaps I can take it to the rescue guy who started this site. He doesn't live far from me.

now, that's a sad story.

Can I heat the pond over the winter? How do I know what size heater to get? I would love to keep the fish more comfortable over winter. I have an ice melter now that just quit working so I am ready for something new. I really need to save for a 75 gallon fish tank for my Jaguar but I would love to know more about a heater for the pond! I think I will start a new thread for that!

Hello; Buying and operating a heater for an outdoor pond durig a typical Ohio winter may well cost much more than a 75 gallon tank.
Does the pond have an inlet and outlet stream/flow? If so, the issue may also include the chance that some non-native species will move into the surounding waters. This may lead to more than how to save the fish as you do not actually know what was placed in to the pond. Some might argue that this situation will need the input of a local wildlife agency. It is possible that if you take that approach the entire pond might be poisoned and that the neighbors may face consequences. Should you knowlingly allow the situation to continue it may be possible that you can assume some of the responsibility. I understand that you have sympathy for the neighbors, but they have placed you in a pickle and apparently dumped the fish without your permission. Good luck.

I had pictured the pond as being self contained, installed by the properties' owner, since he knows the gallons.

If I were in that position, I'd probably try to figure out some way to keep their moms' pets somewhere.. I can just imagine them returning years later to see Her Happy Fish :-/
but I'm a complete sucker for kids.
LOL.

I wonder if livestock water heaters would work for ponds?
Of course the OP may not have a feasible way, even with aquariums.

Unless it was like this years winter lol!

Hello; Yes the winters are not as cold lately as compared to what was normal. Mild winters are one thing and may feel good, but we may be paying with the current heat and drought. I saw that at least a third of the midwest crops are already beyond recovery and the deal is not done yet.

How deep is the pond?

Goldfish can easily survive the winter where you are provided that the pond doesn't freeze completely solid; the top can even be 100% frozen over, and they'll be fine. I've overwintered my goldfish in my ~24" deep & 500 gallon pond (now ~30" deep & 1000 gallons) for years without any issues, and I live in western PA.
