Not all peacocks like open water..some are cave dwellers. My peacocks/haps spit the sand on the rock piles...which are not near the intakes.
Aquarium gravel okay to use in place of sand ?

As for substrate I currently use black blasting sand in one African cichlid tank and One of the Carib Sea cichlid blends in another. Both have created zero problems. Honestly I think it comes down to what you find aesthetically pleasing. I have watched numerous videos of Lake Malawi fish collection and some areas are sandy with bits of shells others are more gravel like.
