For the last year ive been keeping predatory fish and im wondering, would owning a fish store selling predatory fish, and supplies be a good living.(including setting up tanks).I apperciate any advice.

Last year my nephew and I (he is the expert) started a Tank set up and cleaning bussiness,we worked just about 7 days a week but i'll tell you,it didnt pay very well!!!What with buying supplies and gas we were both lucky to walk away with no more than a couple grand each. But i will admit it was pretty fun and interesting!!Getting to meet all kinds of "fish people" and see all kinds of cool fish and tanks, that was about the best part!!!

location location locaation.
If there is a demand for it you can do well, but if no one around is interested or doesnt know about the store you are SOL. There are 2 good ones around me that carry a lot of oddball stuff and they seem to be doing well.

i would say that typically, it's not a job that's going to pay very well. Unless your really set on doing it because you love it, don't do it, because the money isn't going to roll in the way some people would expect

If your just going to sell predatory fish, then I think that would be a bad idea. I mean, there's only a handful of us who want "Monsters." Everyone else wants tetras, cories, and all the other selection of community fish.

yeah i would go with benfica on that...i would like to open my own store one day.....benfica we should do it......

its depends on the location and the people who are interested, it doesn't pay much so if your doing it for money, might as well stop, but if your doing it because you enjoy the hobby and want to promote it, then money will come eventually

As a source for primary income, it would take some considerable investments and a lot of time. Like any other business, it would take time to build your rep throughout the local community, and with a market that has big name competitors (Petsmart and PetCo) you are probably at a disadvantage "money-wise."

If you're willing to put the money and the time to build a customer base, and you create a decent sized following, then you have the chance for success. I have two stores around me that have created and continue to hold a rather large customer base (when dealing with the more exotic pets).

If you do choose to head this route, I give you my best :).

I dont think it would be good for primary income unless you got a really good location and you also have a fish biz with all fish not just pred fish b/c as stated alot of people want the smaller not so pred. fish. I plan on building my own tank if I ever get around to finding away to cut acrylic.. but I am doing that with my dad as a side thing. Anyways if you do go ahead try it as a side job first and see how it goes! best of luck..

Also I think this is better suited for gen. aquaria discussion as it isnt anything to do with ca/sa cichlids at all so I hope you dont mind my moving it.
