I'm moving from NYC to Atlanta at the end of this month - I found a great place down there this past weekend, but it has wall to wall carpeting - nothing too shaggy, but not that real firm commerical carpeting either. What sort of precautions must I take in setting up a large aquarium on carpeting?

I sold my tanks, but I was thinking about 180G for the new place.

Just make sure the floor is level. That big tank will mash down the carpet like it wasn't even there.

yup shim the stand if needed but it will be fine on carpet

All my tanks are on carpet and I have no problems (except when I spill water). If the floor isnt level you may have to shim the stand a bit, but other than that the carpet will just get smashed down under the weight of the tank.

Your carpet underneath will be toast, especially if it's berber

Carpet is actually a benefit as long as your subfloor isnt too uneven. It acts just like styrafoam between a stand and tank, takes out the little inperfections so you dont have to worry about your stand sagging or bowing. But like the other people said, might have to shim one side or the other to make it level.

The real problem with carpeting is knowing how level the floor actually is under the area your placing the tank.
With carpet in place your going to have to substantially fill the tank and observe it's level.
If more than .5" off level then I'd empty and shim it, some may say .5" is no big deal
but I'm leery about large amounts of water and accumulated stress...
