aquarium powered generator?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was contemplating something along these lines after I had to fix the float in my toilet tank. If I had overflow water from the tank trickling into something with a float valve in it could I then have it open up and "flush" water through a filter. Would siphoning action be enough to propel water through a filter and back into the tank? Im thinking that this would be feasible on a huge scale (i.e. roman aquaducts) involving long drops and massive pipes to small pipe conversion but nothing feasible for pond or aquarium. I know its a bizarre idea from a MFK newbie but Im braced for impact.

Gravity would have to feed it and pressure to send it back. So it would have to be below the tanks water level to fill, then somehow be forced back in.

Would progressively decreasing the size of the tube on its way down generate enough pressure to force the water up and back into the tank? I know that pipelines have run up and down hills using this method but the scale is huge. I have a feeling it wouldnt scale down to practical aquarium use. Would be neat though.

Well, actually.. you may be able to make a water-wheel and attach it to a high geared box to rotate some coils. I mean heck they power those danged flash lights by shaking thus passing a magnet between the coils and charging a capaciter. It wouldn't provide more than a few watts but it might MIGHT be enough to run moonlight as was stated before. I'm sure the items could all be bought at your local radio shack

I would assume so, you are going to want to spin the coil/magnet pretty fast. You could probably even wire it up to a timer or something.

I agree with the guy above. Powering some leds yes its very possible. But to get something like 20 watts without some serious flow (talking like 1000gph+)

It would be like a turbine on a car, except gas would be replaced with the constant rush of water ( hoover dam) But then your going to add serious back pressure to your pump. Even those elipticals in the gym dont even put out serious wattage unless your on the max level and pumping balls to the wall. Even then I think I was low-mid 200watts
