I had my fish in totes for a couple of hours with no issues, but you don't want a big fluctuation in water temperature when you transfer the fish from tote to aquarium.

Makes complete sense I have a few heaters so I will use one in the tote and one in the aquarium.

If you decide to use totes don't forget the lids that come with them just in case some of the fish are jumpers, I left a little gap with the lid for air.

Your basement sounds like its finished and heated ,if so you probably would be fine with out the heaters.

Correct. My average temp in my home is normally 72° and I usually keep my aquarium temp at 76°.
