i talked to a person in a local pet shop that has eperiance with rays. he said use salt for rays and that it prvides electo lites for them. what do you think? i don't do it now and things are fine. thanks

Salt wont hurt your rays so long as you predilute the salt before adding it to the tank. It does help with a lot of problems however your biggest defense in keeping your rays healthy is just keeping the water changes regular and often.

I've always used 1 tbs salt (50% API Salt / 50% Epsom) per 50 gals for all my tanks including ones with rays. At this strengh it is barely measurable with a refracometer, I think all fish can benfit from some of the trace elements and electrolites found in these products. Like DavidW said fresh water rays are very sensitive to salt, that why if used, it should be used at a minimum to provide trace elements. I totally understand why most wouldn't use any salt, but in my experience I have had good results with healthy and fast growing rays and fish. Just my $0.02.

Salt is always a debatable issue. It comes down to your own personal fish keeping philosophy.

I always used some salt with my tanks and rays. My feelings are that it occurs naturally in the wild, and helps with gill function.

i have used salt in the past trying to stabilize a ray but did a couple extra water changes to remove it after words

:headbang2 :headbang2 I also agree with this I alway use a little salt . every water change everyone says if something is wrong with a fish turn up the heat and add a little salt , so my thinking is if you add a little all the time it will prevent things from happening ,IMO but everyone has there way you just have to find what works for you and your rays . my Rays dont seem bothered by it .

I have travelled in the Amazon and measured the pH and conductivity and a few other things in Tefe, Manaus ( the Amazon 'proper'), on the Rio Negro and Xingu near Belem
The HIGHEST conductivity reading I got anywhere was 14 uS. The lowest pH was on the Rio Negro, 2.8!!!!! the highest in Tefe, 6.5.
These perams are impossible to recreate in an aquarium, but basicly it tells you that there is hardly any mineral content at all, ie, NO salts.
If you use a remedy when it is not needed then it will be less or ineffective if/when you do need it.
Rays handle salt fairly well up to 2 tablespoons ( or more sometimes) per 5 gallons with no problem, for limited periods of time.
All the salts that your ray needs ( electrolites) are already in your tap water
