The pH is really the only thing that matters for the fish (unless keeping wild caught fish), but you need to have some buffering capacity to keep pH crash from happening. Since your water is already at a pH of 8 I would just add some limestone and/or crushed coral. These will buffer the water plenty.

I use fieldstone(limestone) in my mbuna setup and my ph stays around 8.3. I also packed one of my canisters with limestone as well
