Alright! Hey K krichardson long time no see! Hope all is well.
Great! I've been keeping an eye out for some nice Hostas. I keep reading they are great for planting in the shade. There is a blue variety I would like.
Man SoCal is BEAUTIFUL right now!!! It's been like driving through a garden everywhere the past week or so. EVERYTHING is blooming!!
While we are talking about plants, maybe I could get some help with an ID. I bought this guy about a week or two ago. I had been eyeing it for maybe a month but it was out of my budget. I waited until it went on clearance and swooped it. But it was kinda droopy and definitely not as nice as when they first arrived at the store. They had it outside. Until recently it's been cold and rainy, so I have been keeping it in my laundry room and it's soo much happier than when I brought it home. I can't say I've ever seen this plant before. The red green and white gives me Christmas tree impression lol. Anyway there is a tag on it but I think I'm seeing the name of the plant. Any ideas??

Yo Rock!.....I don't know how I'm just noticing your post but all is well anyhow. That plant looks like some sort of (elephant ear)Alocasia,if I'm spelling the name correctly. There are many different types and I was heavily into them a few years ago.

F FMA4ME the plant is a begonia maculata. Great plant, nice flowers

I'm a bit late with the yard work out back this year but I got a good bit of cleaning done today.....and I found this little guy underneath some leaves.

Just discovered 2 banana tree pups in the pot with my big one:

Hopefully I can get them big enough by winter to test if any can make it the full year without risking losing the mother plant.

Lol, I'd forgot all about this thread. That's quite worrying actually seen as I started it!

A lot has happened since I last posted. The bananas which I used to gush about so much have all gone, both my red and green varieties!

My house bananas simply got too big, bad idea even thinking I could get away with bananas inside, so I composted them!!

The one I had outside which I protected last winter survived admirably, pups too. But on reflection I decided to dig it up in the spring and compost that one too. Why?

I'm done with molly coddling delicate plants. I'm going down the route now of choosing plants which will survive colder spells without wrapping them up, plants which are more suitable for the blighty climate.

On reflection, even though it can work in the UK, a tropical themed garden is more trouble than what it's worth. The chances of a complete garden wipe out are too high.

One new plant I have been enjoying this year is my Kniphofia, which I planted in the spring. Their common name is the red hot poker plant. They do hail from warmer climes but these guys are tough as old boots. The flowering period is coming to an end now, they start in June. When they were in full pomp they were a breathtaking blend of deep red, orange and yellow, well, just like a red hot poker, lol.

Also, the donated plant from Fishman Dave Fishman Dave , not too sure what it is exactly, which he give me when he came to pick my old 180 up, is thriving, I love it. It's like a cross between a cordyline and a yukka.
