the first thing someones sees when the walk into my house is a 265 with a 24" arowana and other large fish. Needless to say, even people who know nothing about fish stare and compliment.
I don't have too many friends into fish but I have one good one and MFk so it's still pretty cool, I think most people think its strange to like fish so much because they aren't warm and fuzzy. I don't go around advertising my fish-habit and that helps me seem "normal" to most people, it also depends on your setup, Even I think certain setups are weird if you have like 50 odd shaped tanks all over the house and crammed in with no room to move,I think the general public would like one massive well cared for setup instead,(like rallys)when I get the urge I "geekout" here on MFk !
My girlfriend loves fish-keeping as well -she's probably better at it then me. So obviously she has no problem with me having fish is very cool. We can also help each other out quite alot.
I managed to get one of my friends on to fish-keeping recently. The rest either say its a waste of money, or they say that I should get bigger fish
My parents also seem to enjoy it which is cool. My dads fascinated with some of my cories, and I often catch my mom sitting on my bed staring at my fish.
But they also think I spend too much money on it
BTW, Demon_fish: Cool Avatar! Amon Amarth is awesome. I'm in the same boat as you, a metalhead who keeps fish.
My friends hardly know of my fishkeeping, so unless they see it, it doesn't matter. My parents just got tired of me getting tanks and said " No more tanks!" Which I may have to get a new 55 gallon tank soon, because I'm getting a bigger stand for my tank and my reptile tank, which houses 2 bearded dragons, each about a foot long. I am only able to get a pond and fish now. Unless I show my mom what fish she would love, which I did with 2 angels and 3 german blue rams. She bought a 10 gallon for them, but we're just waiting on the oscar to go bye-bye to move them into there. I also told her, once all but the ropefish and catfish are gone, I'm getting african cichlids.
My wife things I am insane, my friends thinks its cool, but I am pretty much a like the rest not many of the people I hang out with keep fish. When people see my tanks I get alot of wow, the tanks are soo clean!
I think everyone I know is like ok fine what ever. They think I am to into it because that is all I talk about and they are tired of hearing about it. They also think that I spend to much money on it and research it to much. I also get the one 5 gallon and 10 gallon are to many. They do not seem to understand why I am wanting a 55 gallon. Which I may have found.
But as far as strangers alot of people around some of the towns around here seem to be into it also just do not know much about keeping them correctly.
Most of my friends don't understand why I put so much effort into fish. But since I really enjoy my fish the work part dosn't seem like work at all. By parents think I put way too much money into the hobby. Most people think the hobby is cute (seeing as i am female, 23, and a smaller person) until they ask how many fish I have and i tell them 123.5 gallons total. Then they look at me like im crazy.
