Hi all,
I am new to MFK, and would like your help. I have a small aquarium in my classroom that I am being "asked" to get rid of because I teach Humanities and it doesn't relate to my subject matter (meaning I am using up too much electricity). I am wondering if anyone out there knows of studies that show the educational / health benefits of having fish tanks in classrooms. I'd really like to keep it, as it seems to mellow out my 7th graders:nilly:. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
lloyd378

P.S. not sure i posted this in the right section, if not, let me know where to move it and i will!

I don't believe that there has been any studies done to determine a direct correlation between fish tanks and learning. I, personally would be distracted by it but I can also see it having that calming effect.

The amount of electricity used by a small tank is negligible...

My thoughts exactly.Whoever said that to you could not have had a straight face.Perhaps you could move the tank to the science room?

They want you to get rid of the tank for other reasons. And/or are just trying to break your balls / control you.

+1 maybe they feel it distracts the students. When I was in middle school my life science teacher had an Aquarium in her class room.

Thanks everyone. I found some information that discusses the stress relieving benefits of fish tanks. Worse case scenario, I have been thinking about moving the community fish out to a friends( community fish won't do well with my cichlids at home) tank, and then sticking a betta in the current tank..... that way it's not using any power. :hitting:
