I read in an old aquascaping book about people turning flagstone on its side and piling dirt in behind it to create elevation changes. have any of you guys tried this? Have any Pics? I cant decide if it would look good or not.

I did this a while back... it looked pretty silly in the end.

agree, that's a "fail" . . . the flagstones are too uniform, looks like a cemetery . . .

I think it might look pretty cool once the foreground plants grow in & the slate starts to get some algae growth on it. It definitely looks wierd at first/right now.

Here's what I did. This is my 46 Gal bowfront baby parrot and convict tank. I used a pile of PVC pipe segments and broken flowerpots, wood, rocks, etc to raise the left side up and to make plenty of caves for the cichlids, then i filled the gaps with an enormous amount of pebbles and pool filter sand and planted the top. The only problem is that the sand tends to fall off the top, so theres some matinence issues there, esp. when a little parrot decides to make a mess up there and throw the sand around, which they do. Its' pretty cute though, the little fatties.

I still think it needs more stuff on that side and maybe more elevation in the back, but tanks are always a work in progress as the fish grow and have babies and move around
