does anybody elses rest on plants/wood w/ just the tip of the tail. i keep trying to get a picture because i think its friggin hilarious. they just sit there sticking straight out.
My small albino does this regularly. It is quite the sight.

Just a suggestion if you're going to use live rooted plants. If possible set the tank up add the plants and wait for a month before adding the bichirs this should allow the plants to develop a sturdier root system so they won't be as easily uprooted.-Anne

You're on the right path, but be careful with adding rock, especially lace rock and what not.

I want to add some to my setup, but bichirs can be so darn clumbsy especially after gulping a breath and dashing back towards the bottom of the tank.

New bichirs always bump their heads on the DW in my tank, so I'm worried about them damaging themselves if I were to introduce lace rock.

I agree with Anne, Onion, and Merbeast. Once the bichirs are a decent size, they don't care to hide. All they need is a small spot to duck their heads under some shade in case they feel a little nervous for whatever reason.

I agree, they are definitely clumsy. My senegal spooked the other day and clipped the mopani wood in the tank he's in right now. Left a nice little nick on him. I bought my 100L last weekend, sides and back is already painted black, and I think I am going to run a single 48" light over the whole tank (72"). I'm building the stand this weekend, and plan on getting it up and running in the next week or so. I was planning on running a sand substrate, but would like it to be a little darker than the pool filter sand that I have.

How would it work to mix in black sand or fine pebbles with the pool filter sand? Would it darken it up some, or would it wind up looking muddy?

If you use just black sand with the pool sand, it'll have a 'salt and pepper' look. If you added small pebbles too, well, it would look like salt and pepper with some small tones mixed in.

If you want to mix colors, your best bet is to find a retailer of 3M colorquartz sand, which has a lot of colors and mixing shades will look more natural.

I don't mind the salt and pepper look at all. I have black and white gravel in my 55 and I think it looks good.
