That's if you get a female and if you do, they take about 19 years to reach maturity, on top of being about 2 feet in length. I take care about 20 of these guys and I have never seen one come out of the water. They are just a pain to keep with each other. Always fighting. Great with other turtles and some fish.
Never realized you had so many, you must have one of the biggest private colections of flys in the states:) Considering some possible future breeding? And yes a fly that comes out of the water normaly is either hill or trying to avoid being bitten by other turtle

Amazing.
Thanks for putting their aquatic habits/needs to bed.
That's the end of that one as I don't see anyone going to the extent of setting up a nest/nests just to replicate this.

I love spiny soft shells. Should be fine if you give it a landing to climb out onto once in a while.
They do need to dry out.Mine loves to lay, legs outstretched under the MV lamp.

I know very little about turtles but agree with you in front of my office there are many and the most I have seen them do is "bask" with head out of water but body still submerged yet getting sun rays.

The babies do seem to bask but not adults . well not that I have seen in close to 2 yrs now.
That is one monster softie.
Is that all that's in there?

I had no idea that FRT was Fly river turtle till I posted that. I thought it meant Fresh water turtle lol.

That turtle is a large old male but tiny compared to some of the females. I think he is only male turtle in that canal area but there are few large females not as tame as he is .

Well but if one owns a female fly it will have to confront that reallity some day, its part of their nature and really serious medical trobleship can happen if one produces some eggs and doesant have were to lay them;)

Really like diamond back terrapins, and FRT's are probably the coolest turtles in my opinion
