I have a blue sponge in the bottom tray, poly fil in the third tray, a white fine sponge in the second tray, and my bio media in the first tray. I've wanted to change it up for a while, just not sure what the best way to set it up.
I fill my bottom tray with Poly-Fil (pillow stuffing) since this is where the mechanical filtration occurs first. The other 3 trays I fill with ceramic bio-media.

SunSun 304B Is only $88 on Amazon, guess that's what I'm getting :)

Just found one on EBay for $67.99 w/ free shipping. Type in "200 gallon canister" in the search box.

Well check that the media isn't clogged up, I have that issue on my heavier tanks with canisters, especially if i use sponges or floss.

I checked all my fittings, they all seem super tight. I think it might have something to do with my media, I think the pads I'm using are so thin and they may be trapping air. I think I might switch to a set up like yours, I have the thick blue sponge on the bottom and I might add some poly fil to it. I have a mixture of bio balls and ceramic beads, but I'm going to switch to all ceramic or maybe a mixture of matrix and the ceramic beads. Thanks for your help, this is my first large system (large to me) and my first canister. I'm so used to hobs. But I think I'm getting the hang of it :)

I think that's what my problem may be. I have a thin sheet of poly fil in my top tray that I think was trapping air. I'm taking it out and going to see how things go now.

Thanks!!! Will definitely check it out. Saves me a few bucks :)

So after doing my water change, cleaning my filter, and taking out some of the thin sheets of poly, it seems to be running better now. No trapped air. I think it was the media getting clogging up.

dont get me wrong I love my sunsuns, I have two of them, but they clog bad and fast. You are honestly better off filling them with porous media and using them as additional bacteria space...that's what I've converted mine into. Even my FX6 on my 150 is only filled with lava rock now haha.

Another thing you may want to look into is the use of septic tank bacteria in your systems, it cuts down on the buildup not only in your tank but your filters as well. Quite amazing really. I use RID-X in all my tanks a day before water changes and my filters have never been cleaner without me actually tearing them down.

annamarie92 annamarie92 how often do you clean out your canisters?

I have 3 of these Sunsun canisters all set up with Poly-fil, as I'd already described, and I've never had this issue. I clean out my canisters every 1-2mos and 50% wc every 3-4days. Even in a 2 month period, I never get any sludge, so never needed to do the Rid-X thing.
