Well, this is what I ended up doing that I'm pretty happy with.

I went ahead and used both on the 10 gallon tank. For the first one, I used the stock filter cartridge, mainly for mechanical filtration. The second one, I didn't use the filter cartridge and instead just filled it with ceramic bio rings. I made sure to use the cycled bio rings that were already in the internal filter, and also added about five times more. This was way overdue, but I'm very happy that I finally got it taken care of.

I'd get rid of the ammonia reducing sponge at the output. It can cause problems with your cycle because it will temporarily starve your bacteria of ammonia.

Oh, is that what that is? I was reading the instructions and didn't see anything in there about it being an ammonia reducing sponge. I just thought it was a water polishing sponge. I will definitely get those out immediately and replace them with a regular sponge.

Thanks a lot for the tip!

Maybe it's something else but the ones that came with mine were ammonia "reducers". They have a chemical which binds with the ammonia in them I believe. You are much better off just letting your system process any ammonia

I definitely agree, best to let the cycle go naturally. I took those little sponges out as soon as I saw that they were ammonia reducers. I just cut some regular sponges to replace them.
