ar Growth rate

is there any foods that really appeal to them?
i feed mine (the tank) bloodworm, sinking predator pellets, hikari gold floating pellets, and flake.
problem is ive got hungry gourami's swordtails and about 5 panchax so hes on the lower end of the food chain, he waits for the food to come to him instead of going for it.
any suggestions to feed him up more?

he is shy because you only have one. when young they need to be in at least pairs to feel secure. when in pairs they are very confident fish. my 2 used to steal bloodworm from my 6" GT's mouth, they were the only 2 fish that got away with that. thats how confident they are if kept in pairs. if you have 2 they will start push in for food and will eventually win.
you were told by a few uaru keepers what uaru need when you got him, http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=181596, and you seem to have ignored that advice and now your having problems.

you need to get another one or you will end up with a very shy fish as an adult. i have read that uarus that are kept alone young grow up to be extremely shy and hide away a lot. as the fish is stressed because its alone it may be more susceptible to illness as well.
get some live plants for him to nibble on, use algae wafers, bloodworm and a good general pellet not a carnivores pellet. they require more vegetable in their diet than a predator does. flake is next to useless and i would stop that unless you have fish so small they need the flake. and make sure there is untreated/uncoated wood in the tank as they love to nibble it and its a needed part of the diet.

Uaru growth rates will vary depending on the fish. this will also vary depending on tank conditions and diet.

I have a 8 inch female that was less than an inch long 16 months ago. so that averages out to be around .4 inch per month.

I also have another unsexed uaru that is 7 inches that i got at the same size 11 months ago. so that averages out to be .5 inch per month.

I would say they should be around 6 inches at least within a year, and then slow down after that. they start to fill out vertically at this point.

I also just picked up two more uaru that are at least 8inches, and my guess is they are also 1.5 to 2 years old.

For a diet, mine get Hikari Excel pellets, Frozen blood worm, and romane lettuce. Its not a very varied diet, but its what they love and covers all of the essentials.

You will find that a lone uaru will be skittish and not eat alot. Unless you have a very busy tank, with other simular natured fish that he can use as an adoptive family. If you uaru was much larger, you wouldnt need to worry about other uaru needing to be in the tank, but it can be a crutial point to keeping uaru.

i was always wanting a uaru and so lfs had one about 4". so i got him/her. he/she has been in my 125 gal for about 6 months and is now 6-7"

he/she seems very happy with my geos, angelfish, hujeta gar, pink tail chalceus.

i've been trying to find more uarus in phoenix, but no luck:(

cichlid2006 it was by itself in the shop and the only one id seen in the area.
i know they do BETTER in groups but he is doing fine. hes always swimmign around active he just preferes to eat algae than the food.
if i decided to order him a friend in from the lfs is there a chance they wont get on? or will their instinct kick in.
ive had him about 2 months and abit and hes grown 1" so i guess the 0.4"per month rule is applying

if it was by itself then thats not your fault and sorry if that post sounded bad. if your in the uk then they are availible by mail order from wildwoods, look at www.tropicalfish2yourdoor.co.uk.
because he is young he should take another uaru quite easily i would have thought but ive never had to introduce a 2nd uaru so im unsure of this.

what are you water parameters, in my experience uaru thrive better in softer water, you dont need to go r.o water just soften the water up with some bogwood

i have 2 pieces of bogwood. but in general the water here is hard and alkaline.
and yes im in the UK and its no problem to special order them if they can contact the same supplier they got mine from.
would it deffinetly be worth it then? or will he still do ok by himself?
