Does he have a place to hide? The description of 'racing back and forth' sounds like you have an issue with something.

Is it common for Arapaimas to swim continously against the side of a tank. Like, that's all they do which is swim up against the side of the tank as if they think they can get to the other side.

These are a pair of Arapaimas both about 10" and currently housed in a 4ft tank for a couple more inches before being moved to their permanent home.
