Arapaima Dillema: Please advise if I am going into a disaster.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah, not a good idea. It's going to have a miserable life in a 250 gallon. They grow too fast! Minimum size tank is at least 1000 gallons.

Update: I didn't get it. :(

Thank you guys for the advice. Maybe someday I'll get one when I have a very large pond of my own.

P. S. I read F1 VET's reply over and over again just to convince myself but in the end, I took the fish's side fearing if nobody takes it from me in time then it will be cramped in my tank and be uncomfortable. Wouldn't want that to happen to a fish.

Good thing you didn't take that bad advice (anyone who's had an arapaima for more than 3-4 months would not suggest something that stupid)

I had a 2 footer in a 30" wide tank and it bashed the sides like you would not believe...btw, it got to that size in less than 6 months.

I then handed it off to my friend who had a 10' x 4' tank and it lasted in there for only a few more months until it went to a guy with a swimming pool sized tank where it grew to about 6 feet long.

I give props to the op for seeing reason!

I give props to the op for researching and asking, good job man, just get the aro, itll be fine with 32" width until it hits 32"...

This is an arowana;

Can grow to ~3', should be happy in a 32" wide tank for several years.

This is an arapaima (and not even a full grown one at that);

Can grow to 12'+, and at 24" will still be growing several inches per month They aren't as flexible as an arowana, so given the internal dimensions of the tank it will be already be too big by the time it settles into the new environment.

I know you like sticking up for people, helping fight the flames etc and thats all good, but it pays to know what you're on about when offering advice eh.
;)

By saying:"Just get the aro" he actually did mean an arowana. The OP stated he wanted an arowana, so basically what F1 VET was saying was:" An Arapaima will grow too big, just get an Aro(wana) and you will be fine.
At least that's how I understood it :)
