My problem is many who keep them (not everyone who does) don't have tanks big enough to hold them. They just keep them in cramped cruel tiny tanks. Those who can afford to house them are OK in my book.
I gave my brother a 8" Aripama and while raised in a pond of just 6' x 10'x 4' it grew into a 5' monster within 2 years and ate anything, including a red ear slider turtle it grew up with. It just became too big and was donated to a friend who has a much larger pond.
Fun part about these fishes is not just about its incredible size but also how it gulps air and can be pretty noisy in the evenings. The fact that viewers almost always go gaga on seing the fish is a given.
If you have the pond, nothing quite matches this fish for bragging rights.
