I recently saw an 8" gigas at my LFS for $125 and a few 12"-14" for $200. Is this a good price? And does anyone know how to tell apart the sex of them or are they to juvenile?:arapaimag

pretty average price. but don't even dream of buying one unless you already have a 10,000g tank.

I've never done it but I would imagine buying a pima to be something like buying a 25 year old rolls royce. Cheap to buy, damn expensive to own. And that I have done...

No way. You dont throw a 12" fish in a 10,000+ tank lol... He would go in a 150g first and get trained on frozen and pellet food then i would transfer once he reached a respectable length. I was thinking pond when he gets larger anyway. Im a pro at keeping South American fish in captivity i wasnt asking about where to put him i was asking ab general price for location....:topic:

as a responsible fish keeper, it is my duty to address potential problems. People asking about pimas raises a big flag. If you want to talk to a real pro, consult johnptc. He suggests raising them in nothing less than 600g, and have the future accomodations ready by the time you buy the fish. Otherwise you have a monster that will eat you out of your house and grow 4+" per month. Like I said, if you're still in the thinking phase of your pond, forget about it.

People dont get all offended and defensive, get your pantys out of a wad real quick... Im not going to purchase this fish today, tom, or in the next month, or year. I am a simple hobbiest with a simple question!

yup. thats clear enough.

Around here that's about an average price, and I'm not even sure if there is a way to check the sex externally.

Likewise check yours as well. He should have really just listed this as this is what he was trying to say.

Growth Rate:

Fish will be 2'++ first year
Fish will be 4'+ second year

He's just trying to make sure people know what they're getting into. One would guess if you're asking about price that you're thinking of purchasing. No harm No foul.
