Arapaima in Texas

Charles, in your pond thread you've been saying how you might not be able to afford the 22k pond.

I'm not sure with the dimensions of your pond and the different depth levels that you could safely house an arapaima.

there are some record of man bring Arapaima into US and now going to Federal prison for 5 years! I'm afraid that they are illegal in US. But you can alway get gator gar since they are found native to TX !

Alright thanks guys. I'll just wait til much later to worry about getting one. And I'm not too sure how safe it would be to keep a gator gar because they are suppose to be pretty aggressive at times. Most I think are gentle giants with big teeth but a few are supposed to be massive killers. Think they could be kept with arowanas, pacu, oscars, and large catfish(tsn&rtc)? There's going to be shallow protected areas for the oscars btw And there may be additions to that stock list

there is a member of this forum that have 2 over 40'' gator gar that he keeping in the same pond with some arowana( I think 6), red tail cat, TSN, paroon shark, oscar, tiapila, giant Guarani, pacus and lots of other fish and they are fine !

I'm sure acquiring a gator gar would be a little cheaper than importing an arapaima too! Don't forget that fishing license!

Alright thanks. Ill just go with that then. I live near lake Livingston and that is the lake that has more gator gar than anywhere else in the world so I'll snatch one of them from there. Do they grow fast?

first off your name is hilarious for obvious reasons and second well 22K Gallons sounds good for a single arapaima but these are serious true bony fish and can kill you if you did some how spook them..so theres a risk factor..but anyways back to the question um the permit you should go to your local wildlife place like michigan is dnr..id ask them but good luck to you

do you think a fish that can grow from 3'' to 3' in a years is fast enough to be called fast growing ?
