Arapaima Pond Build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Lucky year ahead. Today confirmed 2 soft shell turtles free. 40 and 30 cm. Outgrew their tank.
Feeding on prawn and small fish. Going in the small pond. They are really nice.

Oh... What a treat to watch those videos. Great job you have done in raising those cats. And Mr. T looks calm and majestic. The reds in him are an absolute treat.
I miss that calmness what he shows while feeding. My cats are fine just like yours but the aros... they would rip my fingers if i get too close lol
Now I want to upgrade my pond to keep a pima :D

Wonderful share Luc and a very Happy New year to you :)

Getting a bit of cold feed on the Turtles.
Most likely put up a cage in the water first with plasticized metal fences. Around 1.5 x 1.5 meter, Tie-rap them together and with an area for basking. Then see what to do with them. Maybe eventually get a large enough tank at home, but we'll see.

Never mentioned it, but had quite a long cold-spell here.
Could see it from the Arapaima, coldest day he ate nothing at all.
Put in 2 small heaters, switched off 1 air pump, and the other one I wrapped the incoming air tube around its Aluminium heatsink-body and everything covered, so air would preheat before going into the pond.

It worked, temperatures after that stayed between 22'C early morning to 23.5'C early evening.
Arapaima had no problems after that.

Last Friday everything back to normal and switched off the heaters, both pumps on again and inlet tube unwrapped.
Temperature now at a comfortable 24.5'C...

4 more fish I got recently, Archers, are still here at home in the 80 Gallon, but will transfer to the grow-out pond soon. Should have plenty to hunt there with insects in the overhanging plants from the bog.
And to really make it a grow out again, I'm likely going to empty it, get the Koi into the main pond and then fill it with some exotics..the Archers being one of them.

Before doing that, I need another catching day for the Tilapia. Barbecue time for some of them..lol... Flame me, but they where meant to be feeders, only a couple of the pretty blue-ish grey ones will stay.
Will look better with the Koi, more color.

It's been a bit silent, as we had an unexpected second cold-spell, I went through quite some trouble to keep Mr. T. ok.
He suffered, had some fin rot starting and I found quite some holes from rats in one side of the pond.
All of that you can find in this thread: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?567233-Arapaima-Faded-Fin-Tip-amp-Rot

The 2 river-fly turtles have also arrived. Will put some videos up soon, but for now, they are doing fine, starting to get onto their prawns.
They are really nice. Gracious in their way of almost 'flying' through the water like a bird.

Mr. T. is fully back to normal. Eating well and his pond looks perfect at the moment, crystal clear water and a very clean liner thanks to additional suckerfish that came from the emptied Koi-pond.
Koi's will today go back in as they also suffered some infection. Lost a few, but the rest now ok.
This week likely also get the Archer Fish in there. Still at my house.
2nd Oscar is doing well, found his place in the big pond. Eating well, growing well.

Finally also got around to repairing the leaking settling tank. All redone and in mint condition.
RTC's are just enjoying all the food they get and one of the Peacock Bass managed to hang on my Cleaning Lady's finger when she had a prawn for Mr. T...lol.

Got two meters to keep an eye on water. Salinity is at 0.90ppt which I will keep adding slowly to bring it up to 1.50ppt. Helps Mr. T to get his color back.
Ph is at 7.8 which is a nice middle range for him.

After settling some other things, I'll be hunting for a nice Arowana, first at home to grown him, after that to join the River Fly Turtles.

That's all for now, hope later to manage some pictures/video of things.
Cheers,
Luc

Finally...
To my surprise, first the big one and later the smaller turtle..started eating pellets.
Big turtle was ok with Prawns, but the smaller one was very shy, hiding and not moving much.
So I moved 8 of the small Koi back and immediately there was more more activity yesterday.
This morning after throwing in some pellets, the bigger one, very clumsy, started eating the pellets and soon the smaller one followed.

They are an awesome sight. Very funny and sweet.
