Arapaima Pond Build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks MC.Arowana...can't go fast enough... It's quite a monster-job and only Saturdays to work on it.
With luck, 2 to 3 weeks and we're seeing a more complete picture of everything.

Luc, your an animal to tackle such a project with no experience.

Great job and looking real good thus far.

Bogs are easy to make and can be made from that current holding tank liner once you have moved the fish.. As long as the bog is above the main pond height, water will flow out into the pond. An uplift filling bog will do the best at filtering out fine particles and hide plumbing. Also, consider a drain on the bottom of the bog area to flush out debris that will accumulate over time to keep gravel and from getting to clogged and channeling water around the media instead of going through it.

Thanks for input Muske.. Really appreciate.
For the bog I indeed want to use the current pond's liner.
I have for some time now wondered about the rubbish that could build up.
So far I have only seen comments on rubbish in the drain-pipes which I understand can be solved with a chimney.
I think that the chimney can better be solved with a couple of valves and reversing the flow into the settling tank, clearing rubbish into the settling tank, rather than trying to clear it out from a PVC pipe.
Using the same pump to just blow it clean

But for rubbish building up in the gravel, mmmh..need to look at that in detail.

I have also thought about using a compressor with an air manifold that would blow the bog clean, but cons are that you really take a chance on your plants by doing that..

Verdict still out on the bog-area cleaning tools.
Need to check on the cost of gravel, get PVC pipe diameters sorted, make the pipe-frame with all the holes.
Hope to get that done maybe on Sunday.
To help with the vortex, pump should be close to the wall with the intake facing the direction of the water.
Outlet is on top, over the rim (through the top-cover) then down into the bog-area.

Water very clean after yesterday cleaning filter and pond.
Mr.T shooting around, skimming pellets from the surface.
Almost like a whale, mouth open and filling it.
Very funny...sure looks happy with his current pond and food.

Settling tank drops about 1 cm daily...since the tank is in full sun and it's terribly hot, I suspect evaporation to be the biggest part in it. Even so, I have no problem with that amount of loss, float-valve top-up will take any worry away for that.
Mr.T. is fully unaware of what's coming, waiting for his food, this morning he hurried over when I looked into his pond. Tickled and stroked him a bit, he's a patient beggar, not giving up...lol. Has to wait a bit more for our cleaning lady to fix my coffee first. hahaha...

He is an awesome fish! You're so fortunate to have him, and he is REALLY REALLY fortunate that you found him and are providing such a wonderful home for him!
