Just a quick update....Pond is full to the max. Running smooth and steady.
Releasing enough water every time to get muck out of the tanks and Mr. T. is happy.
He's increased on the amount of food today. Had his full daily amount of food this morning before lunch.
Might that be increased metabolism with more space to swim and fish to chase? Maybe, but it's a good sign.
Dropped in some small fish yesterday, platies and other small stuff in the bog, just to feed of the muck that's settling there.
Bunch of small catfish (blue/silver striped) in the main pond. Mr. T. has sure snapped away on some of them.
The skimmer drain works ok, pushing nicely along with the bottom-drain to keep the settling-tank spinning.
I'm becoming more confident on the granite in the bog. Normal size would be 2.5cm (~ 1") diameter for the stones. But I'm checking for double that size. The under-gravel water 'diffuser', chimney and inlet will be made with 3" PVC, some elbows and screw-in end-caps. U-shaped with the horizontal part about 1.50 meter long and the vertical parts 0.5 meter high, just above the water-level.
Cutting slots of 1/2" on both sides of the horizontal pipe and epoxy a 1" female connector on 1 end-cap for pumping in water.
That would leave about 40cm of gravel above the pipe and with the granite I think of, that should provide enough flow to keep it from getting blocked.
The granite, even though unevenly shaped, should be coarse enough for the purpose and save a ton of money.
Besides, the black look of it and the flowers/plants growing should make a nice combination.
Some little plans I had:
- Water-Lettuce in Tank 2. No cover yet, but I thought to fill it with Lettuce for some rubbish-removal.
- Floaters, PVC-pipes glued in a square or triangle. Put mosquito-netting around the pipe (zip or glue) but with enough depth to put in decent sized plants like lotus or other small plants., then fill with plants and put at the sides, tying them with a small rope to prevent free traveling around the pond.
enough for now...
Cheers,
Luc
