Arapaima question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wouldnt do it unless i already had a home for it all set as soon as it looks slightly cramped, and not many have that ability. As others have said, its sad that they show up in LFS at all. They should only be special ordered or permit-requiring

They are fecking ugly anyway... in my opinion. wouldnt have one if i had 100,000 gallons, just get a black aro.

To OP, if you want to get a very similar looking fish that is suitable to live in a 240 for life, get an african arowana.

Sounds like the arapaima is out. Thanks for pointing out the African Arowana. I am looking at arows - lost a silver when he broke the hinge on my tank lid and jumped. Also found a cool Jardini close by. I have a few monster pbass som I have to watch the size when I intro. I really can't start at less than a foot. Thanks again.

Care to disagree.. Mine is well over 5 foot now and an amazingly beautiful creature with colours from almost white at the belly, red stripes all over his flank from the middle to his tail. light brown overall colour and his head is almost metallic green when sun shines in the pond.
Aside from that, he's hand fed, being very gentle taking his food.

IMO Only buy these beautiful monsters if you can house them for life like Luc. Buying them makes the LFS take more home. If noone bought fish like RTC's with idea of rehoming them later, the lfs wouldnt bring any of them home. If you have gone trough the trouble of building a massive pond, im sure they can speciel order a monster home :D

My 2 year old was over 6 ft. They grow VERY fast as young.

The problem becomes transport of the large ones. It's not easy, and very few people in the US have moved a large arapaima and had it alive at the end. (That is assuming you even find a place that can house it.)

To give you an idea, that's me on the right hand feeding from in the water. He's almost 2years old in this pic. About half of his body is in the picture.
