arapaima tragedy

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
little paima was tared to pieces by the gar. i don't know what the lfs was thinking. the pond was next to the larger pond. and the only covering for paima pond was a piece of regiform. bad idea

Bad in what sense? is there something to look out for?

Both bottle didn't smell the same. They also had black flakes floating in them like pepper. Every tank I changed with those bottles got fungus. Even well established tanks that were running for years. I got a new bottle and after I saved what I could(lost a lot of valuable rare fish in the process) everything was cool. The next bottle after the good one same thing. This time I caught it fast enough. I only lost the arapaimas, tigerfish, pbass and a a. heckelii. The bottle got grabbed one time by mistake and I chanced my limas water with it. They instantly shed slime coat. I quick changed the water out with the new bottle and they were normal again. I have stopped using prime for fear of it happening again.

It happened so fast it was unreal. I was lost until I found out what it was. It started with my atadapo type 2 pikes. They got randomly sick so I upped the WC. They only got worse with every WC. Fungus and bacteria infections from it. Lost about $1500 in fish from those two bottles.

I've heard a couple different stories like this about Prime. I, personally, only use API products in my tanks.

I primarily use safe now so hopefully wont get that issue. stupid question. .. is there a use by date on prime? could that have been it?

Wow, what do you use now?

I am trying some nutrifin but I think I am just going to build a filter unit for my WC now. As I just did a WC with that and lost a tigerfish. It was fine and eating well. Only did a WC water was treated and 80f. Then the tigerfish started biting the water and swimming erratically. Within an hour it was dead. Water tested perfect. My mbu and angels in the same tank we fine. Of all my tanks changed yesterday with that new nutrifin I lost 2 plecos and the tigerfish. Also my limas started shedding slim coat. It is just getting stupid now. I think that something that the prime clears this new stuff don't. I am just so frustrated with this.

I never heard about it until it happened to me. Took me a while to figure it out. May try this but I think I am doing the ro or prefilter deal.

No dates on the bottles just random bad bottles. Won't know it is bad until it is to late.

the new pima is around 4 inche is it hard to keep one that size

Nice. Keep a constant supply of food for it. Shallow water also to help it breath easy.
