Arapima is the new redtail catfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah he says he does but I don't agree with him at all on this.

He only has two tank. A 10 and a 90. And he has tons of fish. A few pleco species, a GATF, a RTP, a big endii bichir, two pimas and some other stuff.

Oh, I'm very aware of his stock list. We talk frequently. He also had two silver arowanas, yes two, in that 10g tank. I don't agree with the living space given either, but we can't change the way he thinks, he doesn't listen to anyone.

Wonder why people are always saying pimas are not aquarium fish but larger sturgeons grow to the same size, swim quicker and much more, and need colder, better oxygenated water... Of all the really, really huge freshwater fish there are the pima is probably the best suited for keeping in a tank.

And probably none of them can potentially outgrow a tank faster than an arapaima.

I completely understand what you're saying with the sturgeon, but some of the people on here that have them, have a pond for them. There are some sturgeon that max out at 3-4' and are suitable for a 20'x10'x3' pond, with proper filtration. Not saying everyone should get them either, I think the people that sell them need to find out their future living spaces before selling to the customer. We need smart sales men that actually care about the fish(all of them) and should take the time to inform people about a fish that may possible grow to 3'+ so that they don't end up with an absolute mess in the near future.

Surely there are sturgeon species suitable for ponds, but I've seen people keep White Sturgeon (I know for a fact that there is one in an austrian fish farm which measures 9' 5" ) or even beluga sturgeon which grow bigger than pimas in 15000 gallons with no complaints and then people say 20k gallons + for arapaima.. Now let me ask all of you what's worse?

Wow, my LFS would never sell anyone something so big for such a small tank, literally when I started out fish keeping I had to answer a bunch of questions about tank size and tank mates before they even let me buy a sailfin Molly, luckily they know my livestock now so I don't have to answer questions anymore

the problem with the q and a to buy certain fish is that people will just lie. the guy who wants a pacu will just say he has a 500 gal tank or huge pond..the lfs guy isn't going to verify it, so one way or another people will get the fish

Sturgeons have slowest growth rates when compared to Arapima.

Yea, I hate when people do that, once my LFS put my name on a tank so I could buy a loach and someone lied and said they was me and stole my reserved loach!
