This is my very first successful spawn with my rainbow cichlids (and with any fish for that matter) and it truly is amazing. They're so cool. I just fed them crushed spirulina pellet, which turned out to be difficult (if anyone has any tips on preparing fry food please share). They hatched this morning after 3 full days and whatever time this morning, but they were all hatched and in their separate pit by 7am PST. There's probably only about 100 or so, not alot, but I think this is a pretty young pair, so maybe more next time. Parents doing a pretty good job, except for the mother who coughed and sent a couple of them shooting into the air, one of which got snapped up immediately by a tankmate. The father rescued the others and put them back into the pit. I'll make an update when they become free swimming (~3 more days).

BTW, should I pull them while they are wrigglers and put them in an isolated area (breeding net or separate tank), or wait until they are free swimming? or wait until they are a week or two old?

Grats on the breeding. That's a beautiful pair and setup.

With most cichlids once you get the to breed it's hard to make them stop. As for feeding if the frys just hatched give it another day or two for them to absorb their yolksacs and start swimming around before attempting to feed.

Congrats! Crushed flakes would be easier than crushed pellets, that's what i usually feed the fry after they are free swimming.

De-encapsulated brine shrimp works great for fry. I usually add some to water and brine to a cup, suck it up with a syringe and shoot it close to the fry.
With the de-encapsulated brine there is no need to hatch, just add it to the tank.

I've also used frozen baby brine as fry food. Cyclopese is a great fry food too.

Still, I'd probably just use crushed flake or a wafer of some sort dropped near the nest.
