Are alligator gars illegal in Cali?

you should update that list. last i heard most lfs in the area are now carrying true gars because they dropped it from the banned list in cali. distributors are now carrying them throughout cali and telling fish store owners cali no longer banned them. (so i heard)

I don't know...there are many pet stores that'll carry an illegal fish because it's "the favor of the month" And they usually don't carry many, like 1-3 only. I've seen gars around these past couple of weeks, so I guess we'll see a few months down the line if they're still around.

California laws state if its cool or fun its illegal. those rat bastards in Sacramento!!!! But techinically you can get whatever you want in california for the right price just be careful who you let know about it

That's great that you "heard" that. How about citing a reference or providing a link to this info? I checked F&W and DNR and there's no mention of any changes to the true gar status in CA.

Got one at one of the smaller box stores. Illegal or not, the employees didn't really know what it was.
