i have a wet/dry, are ammo chips bad for bio logical filtration?
what else do you guys put in your wet/dry?

ammo chips arent bad exactly, they're just kindof a waste as far as an everyday filter media goes. they can save you if you gave a spike but what you really want is tons of biological filtration. some use ceramic rings, lava rock, or bio balls, but that is what you need to handle the bio load of your fish. that and lots of water changes.

so you are saying that lava rocks can be used as media? how about driftwood? does that hold beneficial bacteria too?

Everything in the tank can have beneficial bacteria growing on it. Even your gravel and glass have it.
It just depens on how much it holds. Lava rock has tons of pores in it, which is ideal for bacteria to live in. Thats why the biobeads in the filter are a porous material and why the sponge in the filter is a must have.

Drift wood would hold a lot of bacteria, but not enough to count as biological filtration IMO.

Ammo chips are only good if you have a spike and need the ammonia to go down to keep your fish from getting burned or sick, like chefdazza said.
Otherwise it should not be necessary. In a properly established aquarium, your ammonia should never go up anyways as long as regular water changes are done.
