I am currently thinning out my 100g south american stock and once complete will leave me with x3 sp.leucosticta, x4 juvi orangeheads and a larger male, a juvi green phantom plec, and a small shoal of lemon tetra.

Other than the tetra all the others are generally speaking bottom dwellers and I want something south american to fill out the upper part of the tank - are angel fish a good option?

No, angels are mid level. Hatchetfish are SA and top level. Pink tailed chalceus is also a SA top dweller.

Most danios are also topwater fish. Tetras tend to stay lower and angels are all over but mine spends more time under cover than chilling at the top

Giant danios always come to mind when talking about too dwelling fish. Not sure where they are from though.

Occasionally my group of four silver hatchet fish will venture the mid level space.:)

Not to keen on hatchet fish and pink tail's get too big for my tank.

Danios are not SA and I have had giant danios previously....never again. They are way too fast moving for my liking!

Not too many options about really
