I'm currently thinking about getting a Cichlasoma Beani from Rapps, the only question is, is it really worth the price tag, and are they really as aggressive as I've read(a single specimen taking over an entire 600g!!!)

Just my personal opinion, and this is nothing against people that keep them.

I think they are one of the most overrated fish ever. They look OK at best, it's not like they are really colorful or particularly pretty (that is just my opinion, if you think they are pretty it's all in the eye of the beholder). I have also never understood why people want the most aggressive fish, what does aggression have to do with wanting to keep a fish. I think they are rare and people are buying them for a buttload of money just to say they have a rare fish. Keep fish because you like them personally, not because you want people to think you are cool for having something rare and expensive. If you really like Beani's and want one that is fine, but don't buy one just to be part of the trend. Every 6 months there's a hard to get fish like this that everyone jumps on and goes crazy about. 6 months later you can buy them for one tenth the price and nobody really cares anymore. cichla Kerbeli's are a great example of this. Rapps was selling them for a fortune and people were spending thousands on them. Not long ago he was selling juvies for $35 or something like that.

If you like them because you like the actual fish and it is something you are interested in then I think it is worth the price. Otherwise don't mess with chasing the popular fish of the month.

Very Very well put, I personally just wanted one because I'm a big fan of guapotes in general, but I don't really want to buy a 100$ fish that can't be housed with my other fish regardless of how rare it is

I've seen plenty of pictures of people on here keeping them with other fish. Not sure how smoothly it goes though or how big the Beani's are. I'm sure some people that keep them here will chime in and give you low down on there attitude.

as you know, each fish is different, im not sure what the demand for them is over where you are but, i would have thought if your after a single specimen then if you bought a batch of 4+ then u could find a specimen which isnt so aggro, i may be wrong... but its worth a try right??

problem is they are almost impossible to find in fish stores, and Rapps wants 100$ for 1 4.5"-5" specimen, and The beani's common name is Green Guapote, It looks like a guapote, and it's a large carnivorous fish from central america. So if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck......

I agree beanis are nice fish, but not 100$ nice, maybe 60$ tops. If you want to spend 100 bucks on fish, buy a group of africans.

it has to do with supply and demand. not many beanis=higher price.
