Are Bichirs Solitary Fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
they definitely don't mind each other's company, and perhaps enjoy it, but i don't think they have to have other bichir buddies.

i'm guessing yours is responding to change in environment and/or tank size. another possible factor could be the sudden isolation from the bichir group you have in the big tank.

it's probably just a little stressed from the biiig change. bichirs can be moody and a big change like that will make them go on a hunger strike that can last anywhere from a week to a month.

just give it time and it will start eating again. try different foods too, especially earthworms.

hth man

Yeah it's most likely acting up because of the environment change. Try feeding it some feeders at night. As grumpy as they like to act sometimes, I don't think that they can resist the predatory instincts of the hunt. Too tempting!! As for the solitary question I think that bichirs enjoy hanging out with each other. They can be testy and territorial at times, mainly because they do have personalities, and they do enjoy certain bichirs company over others it seems sometimes, but I think that they enjoy each others company in the grand scheme of things. As an example my Ornate will nip at most any other bichir that hangs out in his territory too long, except for a few exceptions. My Ropefish, and my Retropinnis get free passes whenever they want, and it seems as though he actually like to nudge and be close to them, but the rest he's quick to let them know that they need to keep it moving. For the most part though I think that bichirs enjoy each others company.

Me too. I've seen all three of mine under the same flowerpot lately. Some days they just want to hang together and on other days, they stick to their own flowerpots, or PVC pipes and nip the others if they come near...lol.

i dont think they are very solitary.
they seem to like piling on top of each other.
but they dont seem to mind being alone either.

Mine all hang out and like to create "bicher piles" ;)
