Are bichirs known to be tank buster like other monster fish? My bichirs get skittish when I walk up to the tank and start swimming all crazy. I hear a "THUMP" from them crashing into the tank every now and then. Can the impact of them swimming into the glass break the tank? What's the chance of something like this happenning?

Do you have the monsterfishkeepers magazines from Japan? Bichirs are all over those mags.

lolwut?

Fishgonewild - I think it would depend on the size of the bichir...If you keep upperjaws, besides ornates I doubt they could actually break glass. A huge lower jaw, like a 2.5 ft endli might be able to i guess.

Agreed. It would have to be a huge lower jaw.

I would be more worried about them busting their head or spine than them busting a tank.

That's what I was thinking. The glass on my 180g is pretty thick so I'm sure even a 2.5 ft. lap would go brain dead if it slammed into the glass. :(

It should not happen unless your tank has very thin thickness like 6 mm. Anything above 10 mm is hard for bichirs to break.

I was always under the impression that the term 'tank buster" was simply refering to a large fish, not the ability to actually bust a tank...

bichirs are tank busters?
i never had a problem with my bichirs. (they are little though.)
why would they swim all over?
hungry?
skittish?
i highly doubt they could or would break a tank.

I think it started out referring to fish that actually could break a tank (such as RTC), but later was applied to just large fish in general.

yeah, they can be at times. I have my setup in the dinning room, and they still freak out if I make too much noise moving stuff around under the stand.
