Are daily water changes safe?

It does multiply however the reason why you need to retain the BB as much as possible is that the diminishing colonies cannot do its job in containing ammonia and nitrite in the shortest time possible. Once both substances elevate dangerously, your fish are at a risk being intoxicated in the process.

No, you don't keep the filter as often as you think is necessary. Clean only if it really needs it.

So the diminishing colonies would become overwhelmed with the task of maintaining the tank before they had chance to reach sustainable levels once more?

it could possibly throw your tank back into a 'mini-cycle' while the bacteria colony replenishes itself thats all. with your daily water changes, you won't see that since you'll be removing most of the harmfull chems. It's a good idea to have multiple filters and clean them at different intervals so never losing a good healthy colony.

+1 for daily water changes, guys with constant drip systems swear by them!

Thankyou and that makes sense. I have a built-in Fluval filter that has 4 different types of media so I may lsiten to your advice with regards to cleaning 1 out at a time... Any idea on how long to wait to begin cleaning the next section of media?
