I have heard that damsels can be very aggressive, but aren't they those small fish, like the black ones with white dots? Is there some other damsel people are talking about?

well the ones with the black and white are domino damsels and they get up to i think 6 inches. i believe that yellow tail blue damsels are the least agressive and they can be pretty tempramental at times. if you include other fish to disperse the agresssion they can actually be pretty tame, i have a neon velvet, a blue and a clown (not really a damsel but they mix sort of the same) in a 29 and they all seem to get along pretty good.

Damsels are bastards. They can be very aggressive, and most will be. If you're fortunate to get some strange individual than you are lucky. I was lucky enough to have a beaugregory that was incredibly peaceful, but this is a rare case and it wouldnt surprise me if he just turned around one day and starting killing things off.

The striped damsels can be extremely aggressive.
We just took our 3 and 4 stripe damsel back to the fish store because they tried to shred the clownfish we put in. I mean SHRED, they were still trying to attack them when we were trying to net them out.

Damsels are also just about impossible to get out of the tank without removing the rock, the only reason we netted them is because like I said, they were still trying to attack the clowns while we were trying to net them.

lol dude read a book... the answer to that question will be in the first sentence of any damsel research you can do.:grinno:

Damsels are like the SW version of cichlids...

well i had a black yellowtail damsel and he was hell...he attacked me everytime my hand went in the tank, when i moved a rock near his little "cove" that rock was battered until it moved away from his area. May have just been that one fish being a butthead, but he acted VERY agressively to the other fish. He almost killed my tomato clown and even tried to beat up a snowflake moray. may have just been him though

Depends on what damsels you get, it is your best bet to research it out. The damsel you are describing is the 3 spot or domino and while not agressive as juv. They can become territorial as they age and usually get to about 4 to 5 inches

I have found that tropical Atlantic damsels of all types are aggresive especially when adult . However in the past I had caught 3 wild juvenile sargent majors and I had them together in a 25g tank for over a year- if I later added another adult smajor they pestered and eventually killed it.
In my experience I have found that lots of crevices and retreats in the rocks are necessary to allow new fish some peace from these very territorial fish species.
