Hey I just went to the LFS and saw some Zebra Danios for 50c each.

I need a nice school of fish that can be added to my CA/SA Cichlid tank, and was wondering if these guys would be a nice addition.

Yeah danios are schoolers although I have never head of them being kept with cichlids

You think they would get beaten on? IME, i've never trusted the people at the LFS's because most of them are just out to make a profit and sell their merchandise but I asked him a question anyways...I asked if they would be able to out swim cichlids.
He said they were very quick and best kept in groups of 5 or more. Is this accurate?

Depends how big your CA/SAs are. Danios were the only fish I could keep alive with my piranhas, because they were so small and fast. If you get 10+ im sure the slow ones will all die, but you may be lucky enough to get 5-6 really fast ones. Or you could have good hiding spots and bank on that.

Danios are pretty awesome schooling fish (especially for the price), and may or may not work depending on your tank setup and size of fish.

Damn, that's cheap.

Yes they are schooling fish. Ofcourse you can add them to your ca/sa tank as feeders.

LOL that actually made me laugh. NOT as feeders, just as a school. I've never tried a school of fast swimming fish with my cichlids.

I have:
(1) Jack Dempsey female, 4 inches.
(2) Convicts both female, about 2 inches each.

The 3^ are in a 55 gallon with a ton of hiding spots. But the guy at the LFS said the danios are mid to top level swimmers so im not sure they would use the hiding spots on the ground.

:)

If you add them, sorry to say they will probably end up being eaten/killed. Even with ample hiding spots. Either that or they would starve.

Got it. Never mind then lol Thanks for the help guys.

Your female JD may try to eat them. If you feed them live theres a pretty good chance she will. You can still try, its only a few bucks. Theres also plenty of space in a 55 with only those 3 fish.
