No, but they take commitment. Daily water changes, high temps. CLEAN WATER. Good food is also mandatory. If not they stunt, get sick and overall don't thrive.

Owner of 14 discus of varying size. Try to get from a local breeder. Mine are in plain tap water and do fine

Difficult is relative that sounds pretty difficult to me :D If discus aren't difficult I don't know what is.

Relative is the key word. To me it's not too bad. I can understand why people wouldn't bother. It took me 3 years to take the plunge, and honestly it's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be

Depends on what your definition of "difficult" is. In some cases, they are easier than most fish. They are visual when something is wrong or bothering them i.e stress bars, clamped fin, scratching, and darkening of colors(they can get almost black). A lot of fish wont give such obvious signs.

However, they do require a little more work than most fish, higher temps. 82-84. frequent large water changes, daily is recommended if you are growing them out. If they are young, 3-4 feedings a day with a variety of high quality foods. Beef Heart mix, beef heart flake, red worms, white worms(frozen or live).

Totally worth it IMO. They are a beautiful fish.

My wife has been asking about prettier fish and Discus have definitely caught my eye. I have a 55G Bowfront I was thinking about using. Im going to continue my research on these fish, but does anyone think that size tank is sufficient enough?

It is sufficient enough but not for a larger group. No more than 5 in that size tank.

I personally have no experience with discus but I've done 1.5 years of research on these. Asking questions, getting personally experiences, mating behavior, etc.

Water changes really aren't that difficult if you have a Python or a water pump. I'd consider things like Uaru fernandezyepezi, Hoplarchus psittacus, and Satanoperca daemon more difficult than discus because they so easily develop HITH with poor water quality. Acclimating wild Pterophyllum altum is much more difficult than raising discus. There are plenty of other "difficult" SA fish out there, so I'm not sure why discus always take the top spot for everyone. I think a lot of it comes down to myths about them that are persistent in the hobby.

But if people don't want to put in the work, I suggest skipping discus. They do not do well if you cannot meet their basic requirements.

I was worry at first too about discus , been keeping arowanas for a while now , last week or so I went and pick up three discus from the lfs , pigeons and melons , they are now in a 125 but divided up to 1/4 , just to let them hang out and get to know the water first , they all seem good but one thing , like I said I been keeping arowanas for a while so everytime when i feed my arowanas he eats like a pig, he eats around 4-5 mp per serving , and he's fast also and the discus in the other hand feeds on blood worms which first seem to be funny to me because the worms seems so small and the discus takes forever to eat lol. , that's The only problem I have with them is that they eat slow and likes to swim around and eat some more and then swim around again , just sharing thank

I think 5 Discus would be nice in that tank. I keep Axolotls in the 55 right , but I came across a 75 for those and the 55 will be empty. Any good places for info on these?
