Are dwarf lionfish active?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hi, I usually stick with the aro forum since I have an arowana but before that I had never had any fish. So I'm skipping around mfk and find this thread where people have FUZZY lions in their fish tanks. OK, fuzzy Lions live in africa. Ha just kidding but have to ask, are these fish really fuzzy? (remember, there's no such thing as a stupid question!)

I once had a very large Volitan Lionfish. He was beautifull! He swam around so much that it almost was hard to catch him resting. He was always in view and never hid even when sleeping.

Dendrochirus lions tend to be less active in the day and spend most daylight hours hiding in caves. They also tend to be more sedentry.

and no, fuzzy lions are not fuzzy, but thay do look it.

Well, my Volitans is still a juvi, so it likes to hide until it is hungry, then it comes out and sits until it sees me bringing the food. Still to small to take frozen silversides, and is completely uninterested in pellets, krill, squid and all other frozen foods. and blue devils are getting expensive..........:( Oh, but when he does see me, the lion almost wags it's tail:)

Try using a long piece of rigid tubing with a piece of shrimp or fish on the end. Just wiggle it in front of him for a while...........and remember if you keep feeding him live he is NEVER going to switch.;)

hrm this changes things a bit. i was interested in a fumanchu but i also kind of want something a bit more active or at least a fish that will float in the open rather than hide in a cave all day. i dont have room for a larger variety such as a volitan so this is making me rethink if i want a lion at all...

He seems to be terrified of the tubing, I have tried this. Even Blue devils that don't move survive until he catches them moving. If they act dead, he won't look twice at them......But I have tried the tubing, with a silverside attached, just doesn't interest him..... Right now we are battling, been bout a week and a half since he ate, hasn't hid for about 6 days. So I know he is hungry. Hungry Lion = active lion...so to speak. Full lion = Hiding lion. So If you wan to get a Lion, keep it hungry, and only feed it about every 3 days. Get it off Live asap though, our you will be fighting like me...... Of course, buy an older one too, seems they switch easier. Mine was about 1.5" when I got him, and hid like crazy. And not much was small enough for him to eat. Now he is about 5-5 " and He is big enough to take small silversides, but still fears tubing. I recomend buying about a 6" lion for ease of switching it's diet. And I too want a Fu, but hear they are the nost recluse.
