Are fish the most abused pet?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
First it's been a while since I've been on mfk and I can't navigate around mfk posts without having the message postblocking me. I'm supposed to respond to a thread...participate, it just so happens this was the post first avail so here I go.

Easy and difficult is all but a matter of opinion, what one defines as easy/hard may be considered totally the opposite to another.

In general animal cruelty occurs all the time. Whether it be in captivity or not in captivity it happens all the time. All outdoors sports that involve animals such as fishing and hunting are considered a form of animal cruelty in different degrees of cruelty depending what it is but nonetheless it's animal cruelty. Keeping any kind of animal in captivity for any reason is considered animal cruelty.

So whose stupid, fkd up, and/or whatever word one wants to dub those they are judging? One who keep animals in captivity(pets), kill, eat, fish, and or hunt any kind of animal are all guilty of animal cruelty, which would make one a hypocrite right? After all we've all killed an insect, fly, and/or a mosquito or too. Not to mention there are those of us who eat meat.

This is always a touchy subject I know so that's my 2 cents.
I see where your coming from, PETA members are actually the ones that dont like any animals in captivity. So yes its a matter of opinion, the thing i dont agree with is torture of animals, ie housing animals in ill suited environments, if you buy an animal it is then your responsibility to get it what it needs and deserves, not to let it wallow in filth until it dies from poisoning from it, speaking of fish of course. I usually dont link my pets to food because honestly i dont have an emotional attachment to the others...

Damn! That is very sad! How in the world could someone let their fish get like this.

***60 gallon with 4 Angelfish and 11lyretail molly fry***

I'd say snakes. At least the "experts" in the fish world will advise newbies on the various needs of different types of fish. "Expert" snake owners tend to be expert snake hoarders, so literally no one cares about their well-being. Stuff them into every nook and cranny in your home and no one blinks an eye. Many see no problem with taking a free roaming snake and literally shoving it into a shoe box because "they don't need much space". They're not like 'cute' animals, so the general public doesn't care.

That is true, although its not just snakes, most of the breeding herps are kept in these conditions, giant racks with hundreds of specimens, leopard geckos have this large problem as well, i have 4 in a 40 gallon, and at night they explore every bit of it.

Well Cats and dogs make up the majority of domestic pets so I would have to say by numbers alone it would be cats and dogs. But comparatively yes, I would say fish do not get a fair shake when it comes to the treatment people will tolerate with fish. Reptiles too. It seems if it's not warm and fuzzy it isn't worth our compassion. So unfair. I was the manager of the Rohnert Park Animal Shelter for 10 years. I remember when I was 22 we shut down a Drs Pet store. All the fish were dead and most of the reptiles had no heat or had burns from hot rocks and were emaciated. We saved a few cats and most of the dogs. Now THAT was a really good day.
