Are Gar's Compatible with "False" Gars?

Well i'm not sure either, it was just a guess. Either way I put my hujeta back in a 55gal so he was safe and sound

instinct will beat out any training with these fish, so you were right in moving the fish back to the smaller tank. just because they were raised on non-live doesn't mean they won't eat live fish (this is what they were programmed to do). it may take them longer to come around, but eventually they will take down live food (or small-enough tankmates) --
