I believe they normally find food by sifting through sand, so they're evolved for it. They can survive without, but they do better with.

I see. Well thanks all for the knowledge. Looks like geos are not for me right now. Maybe I'll just have to get another tank built just for them.

some are , brasiliensis come to mind...btw ..just a corner of the tank having some sand in it will be fine, just feed near the sand so they can be natural

I just want to point out that brasiliensis are not Geophagus. They are of the 'Geophagus' complex, which is to say they are temporarily in the Geophagine tribe until scientists agree on what exact genus they belong to or if they deserve their own genus. They are not the traditional sand sifters that true Geos are, though they do occasionally sift sand.
