Are grammodes cichlids, under cichlasoma or nandopsis?

How come alot of their information such as their scientific name are incorrectly put? I've read such things and pix saying nandopsis dovii when they're parachromis. My guess is they just recently found out that they're in the wrong category, correct me if i'm wrong.

Sven Kullander restricted the genus Cichlasoma to a small group of fish in South America. "C"grammodes has been left without a genus of it's own.

Nandopsis has been restriced to three species in Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
N.ramsdeni may be moved from Nandopsis in the future.

:iagree: Nandus is right...there are several central american species in limbo so to speak as far as their genus classification is concerned. aside from grammodes, others in this limbo include pearsei, bocourti, salvini, beani, istlanum, heterospilus, ufermanni among others and also the south american species C festae. hopefully these species will be given new classification sometime soon.

I believe the current order of business is a reworking of the Herichthys genus. it is highly possible that very soon several of the species (the labridens group and other labridens-like species) could be given their own genus.

time will tell I guess. :)

grammodes are nandopsis...

they are still referred to as Nandopsis on numerous sites, but technically they are no longer a member of that genus. Nandopsis was restricted to N. tetracanthus, N. ramsdeni and N. haitiensis. Nandopsis also used to include N. vombergae which I believe was decided to be a synonym for N. haitiensis. :)

"grammodes are nandopsis..."

They have been called Nandopsis in some books, this was not correct.

Nandopsis has been restricted to three valid species at this time.

N.Tetracantha (Cuban Cichlid) from Cuba

N.ramsdeni from Cuba (Note: this species may be mover to a genus of its own)

N.haitiensis (Haitian Cichlid) from the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

You may have heard of N.vombergae, but it is now a synonym of N.haitiensis.

"Cichlasoma" grammodes, itslantum and beani are considered to be closely related to each other.

It is expected that they will be placed in a genus together in the future. For now, they are called "Cichlasoma" in quotation marks because that was their most recent and scientifically valid name.

P.S. My info on Nandopsis is from Prosanta Chakrabarty's papers: 1. Taxonomic Status Of Hispaniolan Cichlidae and 2. Systematics and historical biogeography of Greater Antillean Cichlidae.

Yeah the three istalum, grammodes, & beani have similar visual ques to each other. Octofasciatus is also still unclassified. nomenclature changes so fast at times. look at acrhocentrus/cyrptoheros genera. Either way grammodes are great.
